Pittsburgh was all hard sunlight and open sky when I photographed Ash and AJ.
We started downtown and let the city give us somewhere to move. Parking garages, concrete walls, old buildings, patches of green—nothing needed to become a destination. The best photographs came from treating the city as somewhere to play rather than somewhere to pose.
Ash and AJ made that easy. There was an energy between them that kept changing from frame to frame: cool and composed one second, completely unserious the next. They ran across rooftops, pulled each other closer, traded sunglasses and expressions, and somehow made even the harsh afternoon sun feel like it belonged to them.
I love couples photographs that can hold more than one version of a relationship. The attraction, obviously, but also the friendship underneath it—the teasing, movement, comfort, and moments when someone forgets there’s a camera nearby.
Pittsburgh gave us the light and the backdrop. Ash and AJ gave the photographs everything else.
